More than 13-million students are enrolled in US high schools. 2-million of those students fall into the small school criteria with a total enrollment less than 500-students. As is necessary in collegiate sports small schools must be represented fairly in relation to the large school student-body juggernauts. These students will be recognized with a Division II Small School National Team Championship.
The first-ever Small School National Team Championships were awarded in 2011 to Calvin Christian HS, Grandville, Michigan boys and Tatnall HS, Willimington, Delaware girls.
With a total enrollment of 375 students Calvin Christian, Michigan boys defeated every large school team in the State of Michigan. With a total enrollment of 266 students Tatnall, Delware girls finished 3rd at the Nike Cross National Championships.
2012 promises to be even more competitive as a national spotlight now shines upon the small schools of America.
